How V8 Actually Runs Your JavaScript
Most JavaScript developers think of their code in terms of what it does — but V8, Google's high-performance JavaScript engine powering Chrome and Node.js, thinks about it in terms of what it can predict. The entire performance story of V8 is built on a single bet: that your code will behave consistently enough to be compiled into fast machine code.
When you violate that bet — by changing object shapes, mixing types, or adding properties dynamically — V8 has to fall back to slower, more general execution paths. Understanding the internals gives you the knowledge to write code that V8 can optimize aggressively, often unlocking 10–100× performance gains in hot paths.

#1 Hidden Classes and Shape Instability
Every time you create an object in JavaScript, V8 assigns it a hidden class — an internal representation of its shape (property names and their order). Two objects with the same properties added in the same order share the same hidden class and benefit from the same optimized code paths.
The Problem: Dynamic Property Addition
Adding properties to an object after creation forces V8 to transition to a new hidden class. In a tight loop, this can generate hundreds of hidden class transitions, effectively defeating the inline cache and falling back to a generic, slow property lookup.

#2 Inline Cache Pollution: Megamorphism
V8 uses inline caches (ICs) to speed up repeated property lookups. An IC is a small stub of machine code that records which hidden class it last saw. If a call site always sees the same shape (monomorphic), it's extremely fast. If it sees 2–4 shapes (polymorphic), it slows down. Beyond that (megamorphic), V8 gives up and does a generic hash table lookup every time.
Avoiding Megamorphic Call Sites
The classic culprit is a utility function that accepts many different object shapes. If you pass 5+ differently-shaped objects to the same function, that function's property access IC goes megamorphic and the optimization is permanently lost for that call site.

#3 Type Instability and Deoptimization
Turbofan, V8's optimizing compiler, makes type assumptions when compiling hot functions. If those assumptions are violated at runtime — for example, a variable that was always a number suddenly receives a string — Turbofan must deoptimize: throw away the compiled native code and fall back to interpreted execution.
Keeping Types Stable in Hot Paths
Deoptimizations are particularly damaging because they come with a penalty: the cost of bailing out, plus a warmup period before Turbofan will try to recompile the function again. Here's the pattern to avoid:

#4 Array Type Specialization
V8 handles typed arrays very differently from heterogeneous ones. An array containing only integers (SMIs — Small Integers) will be stored as a packed C-style integer array in memory. Mix in a float, and the backing store is promoted to a float array. Add a string or undefined, and it becomes a generic object array — losing all SIMD and tight-loop optimizations.
Keep Arrays Homogeneous
V8 classifies arrays into a lattice of "element kinds" ordered from most to least optimized: PACKED_SMI_ELEMENTS → PACKED_DOUBLE_ELEMENTS → PACKED_ELEMENTS → HOLEY_ELEMENTS. Once promoted, an array can never go back.

Writing V8-friendly code is not about micro-optimizations scattered throughout your codebase. It's about discipline in hot paths — the critical rendering loops, data transformation pipelines, and event handlers that execute thousands of times per second. Everywhere else, write clear, idiomatic code and let V8 handle it.
The modern philosophy is: profile first, then optimize. Use --prof in Node.js, Chrome DevTools' Performance panel, or clinic.js to identify the actual hot paths before applying any of these techniques. Premature micro-optimization in cold paths wastes engineering time and reduces readability.
